Artifacts of Teaching

My teaching statement, which explains my educational philosophies, is attached here! I believe that everyone has the power to thrive in mathematics when given the proper support. My goal is to create an inclusive classroom environment where students can make mistakes and ask questions.

This is a prerequisite assessment given to students in my MA 121 course.  This assessment purely informative for students to determine if they have the prerequisite knowledge necessary to succeed in MA 121. Links to videos and practice problems are included so that you have the chance to fill in any gaps they may have.

These are sample lecture notes from a lesson on anti-differentiation in MA 121. Students are provided with guided notes prior to class. These guided notes contain learning objectives and have space to fill in definitions, graphs, and examples as we go through it during class.

This is an exam from MA 121 Fall 2022.

This is the syllabus from MA 121 Fall 2022 designed during NC State's Accessibility in the Classroom course.

At the beginning of class, I give students an attendance code along with a review question from the previous day so that students can check their knowledge. This does not count towards their grade, but serves as a low stakes way for students to test their ability and recall information. They also have space to ask me questions and give feedback here.

Student Feedback

"Michelle is an amazing instructor. I am not a math person by any means, but she's able to explain the material in ways that make it make sense. The course load is fair and not super demanding, but also adequately helps practice the material learned in class. I loved the real-life applications used throughout the class and by Michelle. The testing situation is fair, and having an index card to reference again really helps the "non-math" people who don't necessarily have everything memorized. Michelle was always available for communication and incredibly flexible and helpful with any issues. Having everything recorded was helpful and made it really easy to take any notes you may have missed during class or from having to miss class itself."

"Michelle Bartolo was the most amazing math teacher I have ever had. First of all her positive attitude was so contagious and it was very motivating to be in class because of that. I've taken 5+ math courses in my college career and by far she was the best one. Her proficiency with the iPad made note taking and lecture SO easy. Bringing able to reference her notes directly after lecture online, and to be able to clearly read them and re read them if needed. The many example problems she would do during lecture would demonstrate how problems were done and give you an idea as to how in general they would be solved. Over all her teaching style made me understand calculus and math in general more than any other teacher I had!"

"Michelle is an amazing instructor! Math is not my strong suit, and I was extremely apprehensive about having to take a calculus course. While the class was taught quickly, Michelle carefully explained every concept, and gave us so many resources to be successful. This is the first math class EVER that I have felt confident and successful in, and that is all because of Michelle and her teaching. She is an ASSET to NC State."

"Professor Bartolo is very organized and explains the material very very well. She has an enjoyable personality and is enthusiastic about the course. If I needed another math course, I would 100% take her again. Overall, it is a wonderful class with an amazing professor."

"She always had a smile on her face and was open to questions and feedback. She worked fast, but always made sure everyone was on the same page as her. She really seems to love teaching and made the environment welcoming."

"I absolutely love Professor Bartolo. She is so passionate about her work and it really shows when she teaches. She is always open to any questions students have and is willing to explain something multiple times in order for everyone to understand it. I love the format of the class as well. She posts all of the lectures and notes on Moodle, which is extremely helpful when reviewing for exams."
